Dishwasher Repair: common problems

• Not draining: a clogged filter or drain hose, a garbage-disposal knockout plug left in place, or a failed drain pump.
• Not cleaning well: clogged spray arms or filter, a weak inlet valve, or a failing circulation pump.
• Leaking: a worn door gasket, loose hose clamps, or a pump seal.
• Not drying: empty rinse aid, a failed heating element, or a vent problem.

• Bad smell: food trapped in the filter or drain.

Safe things to try first

Twist out the bottom filter and rinse it under warm water. This clears most drain problems and odors. Check that the spray arms spin freely and refill the rinse aid.
