Washer Repair: common problems

• Not draining: a clogged pump filter or drain hose, or a failed drain pump.
• Not spinning: an unbalanced load, a worn lid switch or door lock, a drive belt or motor coupling, or the motor itself.

Safe things to try first

Make sure the load is balanced and the door is closed. On front-loaders, the pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front) can be cleaned: put a towel and shallow pan down first. Replace rubber inlet hoses about every five years.
